Ethically Made. Sustainably Sourced.
You might be wondering what does it actually mean to be ‘ethically made’? As the term ‘ethical’ is not legally defined it has the potential to have several different meanings. We’ve used this term to really emphasise that we only work with designers in Kenya who ensure that all the artisans are paid a fair wage and are working in safe, comfortable conditions. As co-founders we make regular visits to the workshops in Kenya and make sure we see these conditions first-hand and speak to those artisans creating our Lala Salama pieces, to have confidence that they are happy in the workplace and treated well.
We take great pride knowing that our jewellery is sustainable. You probably know by now that we love brass, the colour of it, the wearability of it but of course the fact that it is sustainable. It is made using a cementation process; where copper and zinc ore are heated together to create the alloy; known as brass. It eliminates the need for mining, and mining of precious metals such as silver and gold have many problems – including air pollution, water waste and pollution, ecosystem loss and damage and a huge concentration of greenhouse gas emissions. Brass is also able to be recycled time and time again, another reason we love it so much.
Our Packaging
Not only is our jewellery sustainable but so is our packaging. Each piece is wrapped carefully and we use linen pouches as well as cardboard boxes to make sure all jewellery is kept untouched and in its purchased condition.
